Ride Like a Steward: SWIMBA’s Guide to Trail Etiquette

Southwest Idaho boasts some of the most incredible mountain bike trails in the country, and we at SWIMBA are dedicated to keeping them that way. Sharing these trails with hikers, runners, and equestrians requires mutual respect and understanding.

This page outlines SWIMBA’s trail etiquette guidelines, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone:

Yielding Right of Way:

  • Bikers yield to ALL uphill users: Whether it’s hikers, runners, or equestrians, uphill traffic has the right of way. When you encounter someone climbing, dismount and step aside politely, allowing them ample space to pass.
  • Downhill bikers yield to uphill bikers: If you’re cruising downhill and see another biker coming up, slow down or stop completely to let them pass safely.
  • Announce your presence: When approaching other users from behind, call out “On your left!” or “Rider coming up!” well in advance, giving them time to react and move aside.
  • Respect equestrians: Horses can be easily startled by bikes. Give them a wide berth, dismount if necessary, and speak calmly if passing closely.

Respecting the Trail:

  • Stay on designated trails: Don’t create shortcuts or ride off-trail, as this damages the environment and widens trails over time.
  • Minimize your impact: Avoid braking skidding, stay light on the pedals when climbing, and be mindful of sensitive areas.
  • Leave no trace: Pack out all trash and waste, including used tubes and wrappers.
  • Control your speed: Adjust your speed to the terrain and visibility, especially around blind corners and on crowded sections.
  • Be courteous and friendly: A smile and a wave go a long way in fostering a positive trail atmosphere.

Additional Tips:

  • Be prepared: Carry essential tools, water, and first-aid supplies. Be aware of weather conditions and potential hazards.
  • Know your limits: Ride within your skill level and don’t attempt features beyond your capability.
  • Advocate for trails: Support SWIMBA and other organizations working to build and maintain trails for everyone.
  • Take the Ridge to Rivers Happy Trails Pledge: Show your commitment to the trails by taking the Happy Trails Pledge.

Remember: By following these simple guidelines, you can contribute to a positive and sustainable trail experience for all users. Let’s keep our trails vibrant and welcoming for generations to come!
